Character Motivation: There are two things that motivate Sarah Jane. Truth and people. And as her time in the series progresses, the two become very intertwined. As a journalist, Sarah seeks out the truth of any matter. It’s how she befriended The Doctor and became his best friend and trusted companion.
She also has a need to help people, but not always with kit gloves. If someone needs a good ear tugging or sharp word, she is more than ready to deliver. The softer side of her is harder to bring out but if a person is in true need of it, she will be softer and more giving. People, as a motivation, keep her going. Seeking out adventure, truth and even something as simple as a nice chat or a cup of tea. So long as someone is benefitting aside herself, she’ll be all for it.
Personality:
Sarah Jane, as is true of most companions, is very stubborn. This is a trait that hinders and helps her quite a bit. It keeps her from giving in when things are going wrong or when she herself feels as though there is little to be done. Even with the last shred of hope is gone, her stubborn will keeps her going. The detriment being that she rarely has the sense to back off without something occuring. Usually it’s her being knocked unconscious and brought to whomever or whatever they need to face.
This, however, doesn’t stop someone like Sarah Jane Smith! In fact, this is often the times when she shines. Aside a stubborn will, Sarah also has a quick wit. She can think on her feet and adapt easily to most situations. Most because if you put her in any sort of setting where she needs to play the coddled or demure woman, there will be sparks. Namely from her temper. She is a feminist and feels that woman have just as much of a place in the world as men. But she is very aware of the world she lives in (England in the 1970s) and is often happily surprised when she goes off on adventures with The Doctor and see women in a position of power.
Speaking of The Doctor, Sarah Jane is the first person he openly calls his best friend. Which is a title that she holds dear but also that she uses when he is being particularly pig headed. She will drag him down or up depending on what is needed. Keeping his ego from inflating to those mythical proportions, or bringing his mood up when everything just feels like too much. She tends to do this in a rather teasing way, rolling her eyes and sassing him until he realizes he is being a right prick or far too emo to function.
All in all though, Sarah is very open hearted and kind person. Her motivations are, as stated, to find the truth. Not for her own sake, but for the sake of a greater majority. Even if the truth is not something pristine or wonderful; she firmly believes that it should be shared. She has a firm belief that humanity is generally good with only a few truly bad apples in the bunch, but she knows that she can handle those bad apples with a sharp tongue and quick shot.
Canon Strength/Weaknesses:
Strength
Quick thinking
Charming~
Very adaptable and willing to change at a moments notice.
But she will stand her ground on morals and what needs to be done for the greater versus the minor. (Her and the Doctor often argue on this.)
Excellent aim.
Can’t be mind controlled (thank you Doctor D<)
Weaknesses
Stubborn
Very human, no special powers or abilities.
Quick temper
Her mind can be easily read though there is little danger to her physically.
Apprentice Sorcerer Application
Class: Hero. While Sarah Jane is more than capable of going out on adventures alongside others, her over all reasoning for these adventures lends itself towards the Hero class. She is first and foremost a journalist, becoming one of the top ones in England by the end of the Classic Who era (circa 1988). She prefers to take a cause and stick by it, doing whatever she can to ensure that the cause is held up. It’s her main MO, find something that needs help and help it, do or die. With or without someone helping her out. She will gladly take help or be the help, but more often than not, she is out of her own will and wants.
Weapon: A shotgun. She’ll start with the available flintlocks in Main Street and eventually end up with a modified double-barrel Winchester.
Magic Style: n/a
Element: Void. Comes with spending so many years flying through space.
Prince/Princess: n/a
Sample Section
First Person Sample:
[It starts off with Sarah looking rather put out. Pouting and rolling her eyes.]
Look at this. I’m here only two days, two days, and already he’s managed to get himself into some sort of mess. Out in the jungle like he’s still only five hundred.
[She shakes her head and leans forward, trying not to roll the mirror around.]
So, what all do I need to do to go out and get my best friend and drag him back by his ears, hmm? Special permission? Or can I just grab my gun and be off?
[Then she gives a cheeky little smile complete with a cute nose wrinkle.]
And if you can hear this Doctor, you better not be hurt! Or else.
[She waves and cuts off the feed.]
Third Person Sample:
It wasn’t as though the place wasn’t beautiful. It was. That sort of nostalgic glow that made everything feel warm and cozy even on rainy nights. Just the sort of night that had her actually settled down and curled up on a chair on the balcony and watching the rain fall over Main Street.
But there was still an uneasiness in the air. Something that was keeping her from going that one inch further into complete relaxation. But of course, she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. Three cups of strong tea and all she’d managed was a jittery foot and two trips to the loo. No breakthrough or Eureka moment. Just...jitters.
Maybe it was that idea of being stuck somewhere that wasn’t home. Oh sure the prospect had cropped up several times before but...she hadn’t been entirely alone. There was Harry, or her aunt or well, The Doctor bless his scarf.
Oh.
Maybe that was it then. Not that she was alone, but the fact that she wasn’t. There were people around that knew her name or knew of her but that she couldn’t quite place. They had an advantage over her and it made her feel like she was second guessing everything she did. Reputation was a horrible thing to have and she could only pout and sink into the blanket at the thought of it all.
Not alone enough to be lonely, but not settled enough to be among her friends. What a wonderful place to be.
The rain continued and she pouted at a little bird that landed on her knee, “Oh? Come to dry off?” It tweeted at her before pushing under the folds of the blanket. “Hey, who invited you?” She smiled though, scratched its head and looked back out. Maybe she’d just have to be patient.
Just a little bit.
